Tallow Skincare FAQ
Tallow Skincare FAQ
We know you have questions — and we love that. Below you'll find honest, straightforward answers about our tallow skincare products. If something isn't covered here, reach out and we'll help.
What is tallow?
Tallow is rendered beef fat, traditionally used for centuries as a skin moisturizer and protectant. It is rich in fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K) and fatty acids that closely mimic the lipid profile of human skin. We use high-quality, carefully sourced tallow in our products to keep the ingredient list simple and effective.
Is tallow safe for sensitive or acne-prone skin?
Many people with sensitive skin do very well with tallow because it is a single whole-food ingredient without synthetic fillers, artificial fragrances, or harsh preservatives. That said, every skin is different. Because tallow is an animal fat, it is inherently occlusive — meaning it creates a barrier on the skin. For some acne-prone skin types this can be beneficial; for others it may not be the right fit.
We always recommend a patch test before full use (see below), especially if your skin is reactive, and encourage you to start with a small amount to see how your skin responds.
How do I patch test a new tallow product?
A patch test is simple and only takes a few days:
- Apply a small amount of the product to the inside of your wrist or behind your ear.
- Leave it on for 24 hours without washing the area.
- Check for any redness, itching, or irritation over the following 24–48 hours.
- If no reaction occurs, the product is likely a good fit for you.
- If you experience irritation, discontinue use.
Starting slowly is always the best approach with any new skincare product.
What does tallow smell like?
Pure, unscented tallow has a VERY mild, faint beefy or buttery scent — this is natural and is not a sign of a problem. In our scented products, botanical essential oils and natural fragrances are blended to complement or replace that base note. Our unscented options retain the faint natural tallow scent. If you are highly sensitive to fragrance, our pure tallow is the best starting point.
Scent can vary slightly from batch to batch depending on the season and sourcing of the tallow — this is completely normal for a natural product.
How should I store my tallow products?
Tallow is a natural fat and benefits from a little care in storage:
- Keep away from heat. Store at room temperature or cooler. Avoid leaving your product in a hot car, near a sunny windowsill, or next to a heat source.
- Keep away from direct light. UV exposure can degrade natural fats over time. A drawer, cabinet, or dark shelf is ideal.
- Keep the lid on. Limit air exposure when not in use to preserve freshness.
My tallow melted or changed texture — is it still good?
Yes, in most cases. Tallow is sensitive to temperature. It melts easily above about 80–85°F (27–29°C) and will re-solidify when cooled. If your product melted and resolidified, the texture may look slightly different (grainier or softer than before) but the product itself is not ruined.
To re-solidify a melted balm cleanly, place it in the refrigerator for a few hours. Whipped products may lose some of their whipped texture after melting but will still perform the same way on skin.
If you notice a rancid or off odor after a temperature event, that is a sign the product has been compromised — discontinue use in that case.
What is the shelf life of tallow skincare?
Our tallow products are handcrafted in small batches to keep them as fresh as possible. Unopened, properly stored tallow products typically last 12–18 months. Once opened, we recommend using within 6–12 months for best results.
Factors that shorten shelf life include exposure to heat, light, water, and unclean hands (always use a clean spatula or wash your hands before dipping into a jar). Using a scoop or spatula instead of fingers is the best habit to maintain product freshness.
How do I use tallow balm?
Less is more with tallow — it is a concentrated product. Here are some tips:
- Warm a small amount between your fingertips before applying to skin.
- Apply to damp skin after a shower for maximum absorption.
- Use on face, body, lips, cuticles, dry patches, or anywhere that needs moisture.
- Layer lightly — tallow spreads further than you expect.
